Can you really create your future? I believe so! We can simply wish to travel or we can make a plan that will–literally–deliver us to our destination.
In order to create your future, you’ll need to put in some effort. While the New Year is a favorite starting point, you can begin any time during the year. It’s just a matter of deciding. In three easy steps, you can be on your way…
- You’ll need money, of course. If you don’t have a travel fund yet, get started here. Even small amounts of cash add up quickly. Once you start your travel savings, consider that money strictly off-limits. (Although it can also serve as an Extreme Emergency Fund, too. Extreme meaning life-or-death, not a depleted Starbucks card.)
- Get specific about what you want. Not just “travel more” or “go to Thailand,” but the exact outcome you want. Picture it in your mind: On the beach in October at Maya Bay, Koh Phi Phi. Add details: How long you’ll stay, what you’ll pack. Will you visit a spa or take day trips? Even if you change the itinerary to a different Thai resort, you’ve made your dream real. Don’t worry about logistics, just imagine how fabulous it will be…
- Commit to your dream. For this, I recommend Hennriette Anne Klauser’s classic, Write It Down, Make It Happen. I’ve been a fan of her book since it came out in 2001–it’s a tribute to her that it remains in print. Dr. Klauser’s point is simple: “Simply writing down your goals in life is the first step toward achieving them. Writing can even help you understand what you want.”
That’s it, fellow travelers! Yes, you’ll have to do some legwork—and yes, you can truly create your future. Happy New Year, whatever your plans are for the coming year.
