Flags of the world: Everyone knows Canada's flag has a maple leaf!

Can you identify the flags of the world? We all know the Stars & Stripes, Union Jack, Maple Leaf, and Rising Sun…but the others? Here’s a quiz to see how many you know.

Before we start the quiz: What’s the history of flags?

The oldest known flag is the Shahdad Standard, a bronze square on a pole from Iran (Persia) that is dated back to 2400 BC. It was considered to be a source of power and protection from the gods.

Today, flags are a source of pride and patriotism for every country. Each color, bar, slash, and symbol has meaning. They are descendants of the standards carried into battles since ancient times. They were used to rally the troops and communicate on the battlefield. It was a disastrous omen for an army to lose its standard during war.

Take the “Flags of the World” Quiz

Even seasoned travelers will likely be stumped by some of these. I’ve included the year that the flag was adopted by the country…maybe that will be helpful. Jot down your best guess, then scroll to the bottom for the answer.
