The Madison Farmers Market may be one of the prettiest in the country. With the Wisconsin State Capitol building at the center, farmers and vendors are on every side of the Capitol Square…and down State Street, behind the Capitol. It’s the nation’s largest producers-only farmers market. There’s just one rule: Everything sold has to come from Wisconsin.
From April through November, shoppers can stroll (always in a counter-clockwise direction) around the square every Saturday to see what’s fresh, beautiful, and interesting. Officially, it’s called the Dane County Farmers’ Market. Since 1972, the mission has been to bring rural and urban communities together.
A few more things about the mission of the Madison Farmers Market:
- To provide an educational forum for consumers to learn the uses and benefits of quality, locally grown or prepared food products.
- To provide educational opportunities for producers to test and refine their products and marketing skills.
- To enhance the quality of life in the greater Madison area by providing a community activity which fosters social gathering and interaction.
- To preserve Wisconsin’s unique agricultural heritage and the historical role which farmers’ markets have played in it.
Simply put, it’s a beautiful setting. At any time, take a break to step into the Capitol Building and see the murals inside the Dome. Climb the stairs to the Dome and walk outside–the views are impressive. There are tours, if you’re interested.
Wherever you live, there is likely a farmers market. Go! Talk to the growers, get to know them. Return as often as possible. Support their effort and your community.
