Sicily Markets: Beauty of Fresh Foods

Sicily = Perfect produce!

The markets of Sicily show the island’s bounty of fresh produce and fish at their freshest. Go early to see the vendors prepare for the day, bantering with each other as they set up their stalls. Sicily has the perfect climate for growing fruits and vegetables. All year long, the island’s residents are able to prepare meals from fresh, local produce. With five citrus harvests a year, markets proudly display the latest crop.

Fish every day…

And the fish! The selection seems endless. Tommaso Pantè  a Licensed Tour Guide and International Tour Manager based in Sicily explains that in a month, families eat fish 26 days. Meat–usually pork or rabbit–is served about two times. Chicken? Hardly ever. “We’re raised to believe that chicken is only for poor people.”

Grocery stores? Not as we know them.

There certainly are grocery stores–there were two small ones close to my hotel in Palermo. But many people still shop daily, going to their favorite vendors, who save the best for their loyal customers. When you see the choices that are available, just steps from their door, you’ll wish you could do it too…
